The EPUB book format (.epub) provides the smoothest and most comfortable reading experience, and it is compatible with most commercial readers such as Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play Books. There are also a number of free e-reader apps that work very well, FBReader for iOS and Android being our free reader of choice.

The PDF format (.pdf) is the most ubiquitous reading experience, and all it requires is the free Adobe Acrobat Reader (which you probably already have). Like an EPUB file, it can also be imported into most commercial readers such as Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play Books. Major drawbacks in reading PDF files in Acrobat or other e-readers are the inability to adjust font type, size, line-height, etc., and an overall "clunky" user experience.

Identical EPUB and PDF versions of your book will be included in your zipped download, just unzip the folder to a known location on your device. A quick online search should provide the info you need to import our EPUB products into your reader of choice, and we include instructions with every download.

Prelude

“If you could go back to your college fraternity or sorority days, would you? What if you went back knowing one of your brothers or sisters would become a serial killer? What would you do?”

Rick Hansen is an Alabama songwriter and musician with an independent Americana band called Bama Sound. His co-author of The Pi Kappa Phi Killer, Sir Carlton Lawrence, is a novelist who lives in rural northeast England. The two spent their early childhood years on the island paradise of Bermuda and recently reconnected.

Besides co-authoring this true crime biography, Lawrence also wrote The King of Drones.

One: “Pistos Chi Philios”

It was definitely an upgrade from the standard Bluebird yellow school buses the Montgomery County School Board used to ferry its students to and from school. On that night, there were 96 players, 8 coaches, 2 trainers, an equipment manager…and a chaplain enjoying the spaciousness and comfort afforded by not just one, but two shiny Greyhound travel buses.

The trip from our locker room to Cramton Bowl was less than five miles, and to some faculty members, the extravaganza was a waste of precious dollars that could have been put to better use. But high school football in the South is a religion, so fortunately those small-minded individuals were in the minority.

The last half mile of the journey involved a stretch of road that went through a sprawling 800-unit low-income housing project. Peering out of my window in the first bus, I noticed a throng of people gathered on either side of the road. When you’re a football player in high school, you think you’re a god, and I initially thought the crowd was there to cheer for us and wish us luck in our cross-town grid iron rivalry. That was until someone hurled a rock into the windshield of the first bus. After the initial impact, rocks started pelting both buses from all directions.

In an instant, I went from thinking we were indestructible to hugging the floor of the bus praying that the crowd wouldn’t tip it over. Most of my teammates did the same, except Willie “Rudu” Richards, who quickly walked to the exit door of the bus. Rudu was a starting defensive back who probably could have played major college ball were it not for a murder conviction from an incident occurring in the summer after he graduated.

We didn’t know it at the time, but Rudu had previously lived in the projects and not only knew the gang that controlled the territory but was a member. When integration came to the Montgomery public schools, Rudu transferred to Jeff Davis High, which had previously been an all-white school. I liked him.
